The System Wasn't Built for Women: It’s Time to Stop Following the Rules in A Game Rigged Against You
We're told there isn't one path to success. But the message is consistent: go to school, get good grades, go to college, get a job, find a partner, get married, have kids, live a good life.
The problem is that the data doesn't support that path for women. And the more boxes you check, the more obvious it becomes.
The Patriarchal System Fails Women at Every Turn
Let’s start with money. Women earn less, receive different financial advice (saving their hard earned dollars or pinching pennies instead of investing), and accumulate less wealth over time because we started with less. The gap doesn't stay even. It compounds across a lifetime.
Then we look at hiring. The tools companies use to screen candidates are built to reward linear career paths, same industry, steady progression, predictable titles. If your career looks anything different, the algorithm filters you out before a human ever sees your name. For women with ADHD, who often build rich, non-linear careers driven by curiosity and adaptability, this isn't a minor inconvenience. It's a structural barrier dressed up as a neutral process.
Then the marriage that was supposed to be part of the plan. Research from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis shows that married men out-earn single men, married women, and single women at every age. Married and single women earn nearly the same. The same institution that accelerates men's wealth changes almost nothing for women, except the labor.
And when that marriage ends? Family courts that were never designed to recognize emotional abuse and coercive control. Legal processes that drain women financially while the partner with more resources simply waits them out. A system that mistakes a mother's attempt to protect her children for a problem with her.
These aren't separate issues. They are one system, working exactly as it was designed…and not for women.
I Learned This the Hard Way
I graduated with honors, was a collegiate athlete, earned my master's degree, and built what looked like a strong resume. I did everything ‘right’. And I still came out of grad school accepting $38,000 a year because no one had taught me my value. I’ve watched men out-earn me in roles I was more than capable of doing. I still ended up in a marriage defined by emotional abuse and coercive control, navigating a family court system that didn't have the tools to understand what I was describing. Within a year, I had my daughter, separated from my husband, and lost my job.
I had checked every box. None of it had protected me from reality.
What followed my separation was the hardest and most important work of my life. For years, I tried to work harder inside a system that wasn't built for me, but treading water. I was continually trying to shove a square peg in a round hole.
That's what changed everything. Not more effort. It was building systems and designing a life that was aligned as a woman who didn’t fit the mold.
You Don't Need Work Harder, You Need to Better Design Your Life
The women I work with are not failing because they aren't trying hard enough. They are highly capable, deeply self-aware, and exhausted from optimizing for a system that was never going to reward them the way it rewards others.
The most powerful shift isn't working harder. It's recognizing that the system was never neutral and deciding to build your own.
That's what Smart Women School exists to do. Not to offer siloed solutions or another checklist to complete, but to build life strategies and systems for high-achieving women that actually get them to the lives they want and deserve!
You don't need to learn more and work harder. You need a system built for you.
